ς. That which was from the beginning,
which we have heard,
Ϛ. jj ζ. which we have seen with our eyes,
which we have looked upon,
η. and our hands have handled,
concerning the Word of life; (1:1)

ς. (For the life was manifested,
and we have seen it,
Ζ. '' ζ. and bear witness,
and shew unto you that life eternal,
η. which was with the Father,
and was manifested unto us;) (1:2)

ς. that which we have seen and heard declare we unto you,
that ye also may have communion with us:
Η. jj ζ. and indeed our communion is with the Father,
and with his Son Jesus Christ. (1:3)
η. And these things write we unto you,
that your joy may be full. (1:4)
1. And this is the message [ἀγγελία] which we have heard of him, (cf. 2:25, 3:11)
Ϛ. tj' Α. 1’. and declare [ἀναγγέλλομεν] unto you,
10. that God is light,
10’. and in him is no darkness at all. (1:5)

ς. If we say that we have communion with him, and walk in darkness,

ς. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,

η. and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son purifieth us from all sin. (1:7)

ς. If we say that we have no sin,

η. and the truth is not in us. (1:8)

ς. If we confess our sins,
ο/η. j ζ. he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins,
η. and to purify us from all unrighteousness. (1:9)

η. and his word is not in us. (1:10)

α. My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not.
β. And if anyone sin,
Η. j Ω. t χ. we have an intercessor with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: (2:1)
ο. and he is the propitiation for our sins: (cf. 4:10)
ω. and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world. (2:2)
1. And by this we do know that we know him,
' if we keep his commandments. (2:3)
10. He that saith, “I know him,” and keepeth not his commandments,
'' is a liar, and the truth is not in him. (2:4)

1’. But whoso keepeth his word, in him truly is the love of God perfected:
by this we know that we are in him. (2:5)
10’. He that saith he abideth in him owes it,
'' even as He walked, himself also so to walk. (2:6)

ς. Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you,
1. tj ζ. but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning.
η. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning. (2:7)

ς. Again, a new commandment I write unto you,

η. because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth. (2:8)

10. He that loveth his brother abideth in the light,
10’. and there is no cause of stumbling in him. (2:10)

10. and knoweth not where he goeth off to,
10’. because that darkness hath blinded his eyes. (2:11)

j because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake. (2:12)
ζ. I write unto you, fathers,
1. ' because ye have known him that is from the beginning.
η. I write unto you, young men,
'' because ye have gained victory over the evil one.

ς. I have written unto you, little children,
j because ye have known the Father. (2:13)
ζ. I have written unto you, fathers,
10. because ye have known him that is from the beginning.
η.tI have written unto you, young men,
because ye are mighty,
and the word of God abideth in you,
and ye have gained victory over the evil one. (2:14)

1. Love not the world,
ς.t 1’. neither the things that are in the world.
10. If anyone love the world,
10’. the love of the Father is not in him. (2:15)
1. For all that is in the world,
Ω. '''' ζ.j 1’. the desire of the flesh, and the desire of the eyes, and the pompousness of life,
10. is not of the Father,
10’. but is of the world. (2:16)
1. And the world passeth away,
η. 10. and the desire thereof:
10’. but he that doeth the will of God
1’. abideth for ever. (2:17)
1. Little children, it is the last hour:
Α. t' 10. and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come,
10’. even now are there many antichrists;
1’. whereby we know that it is the last hour. (2:18)
α. They went out from us,
β. but they were not of us;
Β. ξ. (for if they had been of us, they would have abided with us;)
ο. but it was so, that they might be made manifest
ω. that they were not all of us. (2:19)
α. But ye have a chrism from the Holy One,
β. and know all things. (2:20)
Χ. ' χ. I have not written unto you because ye have not known the truth,
ο. but because ye have known it,
ω. and that any lie is not of the truth. (2:21)
ς.j Who is a liar
but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ?
Ο. t ζ.j He is the antichrist,
that denieth the Father and the Son. (2:22)
η.' Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father.
[He that confesseth the Son hath the Father also.] (2:23)
1. That which ye have heard from the beginning, therefore,
ς. tj 10. let that abide in you.
10’. If in you shall abide
Ω. j 1’. that which ye have heard from the beginning,
ζ. ye also in the Son and in the Father shall abide. (2:24)
η. And this is the promise [ἐπαγγελία] that he hath promised us: life eternal. (cf. 1:5, 3:11) (2:25)

' ς. These things have I written unto you concerning them that deceive you. (2:26)
α. '' ζ. But the chrism which ye have received of him abideth in you,
' η. and ye need not that anyone teach you:
β. but as the same chrism teacheth you concerning all things,
Ϛ. χ. and is true, and is no lie,
ο. and even as it hath taught you,
ω. ye shall abide in him. (2:27)
1. And now, little children, abide in him;
Ζ. '' 10. that, when he shall be made manifest,
10’. we may have boldness,
1’. and not be ashamed before him in his presence. (2:28)
Η. If ye know that he is righteous,
ye know that everyone that doeth righteousness is born of him. (2:29)
1. Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us,
Α.j'1’. that we should be called children of God:
10. therefore the world knoweth us not,
10’. because it knew him not. (3:1)
1. Beloved, now are we children of God,
Β. t 10. and it hath not yet been manifested what we shall be:
1’. but we know that, when he shall manifest, we shall be like him;
10’. for we shall see him as he is. (3:2)
1. And everyone that hath this hope in him cleanseth himself,
Ξ.t 1’. even as He is clean. (3:3)
10. Whosoever doeth sin doeth lawlessness also:
10’. for sin is lawlessness. (3:4)
1. And ye know that He was manifested to take away our sins;
Ο. 1’. and in him is no sin. (3:5)
10. Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not:
10’. whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him. (3:6)
1. Little children, let no one deceive you:
Ω. j 10. he that doeth righteousness
1’. is righteous,
10’. even as He is righteous. (3:7)

1. He that doeth sin is of the devil;
Ϛ. t 10. for the devil sinneth from the beginning.
1’. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested,
10’. that he might destroy the works of the devil. (3:8)
1. Whosoever is born of God doth not do sin;
Ζ. tj 10. for his seed abideth in him:
1’. and he cannot sin,
10’. because he is born of God. (3:9)
1. In this the children of God are manifest,
Η. 1’. and the children of the devil:
10. whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God,
10’. neither he that loveth not his brother. (3:10)
α.''For this is the message [ἀγγελία] that ye heard from the beginning, (cf. 1:5, 2:25)
that we should love one another. (3:11)
β.' Not as Cain: he was of the evil one,
and slew his brother.
Α. ' χ. And wherefore slew he him?
ο.' Because his own works were evil,
and his brother’s righteous. (3:12)
ω. Wonder not, my brethren,
if the world hate you. (3:13)
α. We know that we have passed over from death unto life,
β. because we love the brethren.
Β. χ. He that loveth not a brother abideth in death. (3:14)
ο. Whosoever hateth his brother is a manslayer:
ω. and ye know that no manslayer hath life eternal abiding in him. (3:15)
ς. By this we know love,
Χ. j' ζ. because He laid down his life for us:
η. and we owe it to lay down our lives for the brethren. (3:16)
ς.j But whoso hath the livelihood of this world,
and seeth his brother have need,
Ο. t' ζ.t and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him,
how abideth the love of God in him? (3:17)
η.' My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue;
but in work and in truth. (3:18)
α. And by this we know that we are of the truth,
β. and shall assure our hearts before him. (3:19)
Ω. '' χ. For if our heart condemn us,
ο. God is greater than our heart,
ω. and knoweth all things. (3:20)

ς. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not,
we have boldness toward God. (3:21)
Ϛ. t ζ.t And whatsoever we ask,
we receive of him,
η.' because we keep his commandments,
and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. (3:22)
1. And this is his commandment,
Ζ. tj 10. That we should be faithful to the name of his Son Jesus Christ,
10’. and love one another,
1’. as he gave us commandment. (3:23)
1. And he that keepeth his commandments abideth in him,
Η. j 10. and he in him.
1’. And by this we know that he abideth in us,
10’. by the Spirit which he hath given us. (3:24)
α. Beloved, be faithful not to every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God:
β. because many false prophets are gone out into the world. (4:1)
Α. ξ. By this know ye the Spirit of God:
ο. Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: (4:2)
ω. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God:
ς. and this is that spirit of antichrist,
ζ. whereof ye have heard that it should come,
η. and even now is in the world already. (4:3)

α. Ye are of [ἐκ] God, little children,
β. and have gained victory over them:
ς. ' χ. because greater is he that is in you,
ο. than he that is in the world; (4:4)
ω. they are of [ἐκ] the world.
α. For this reason they speak from [ἐκ] the world,
β. and the world heareth them. (4:5)
Β. '' ζ. ' χ. We are of [ἐκ] God:
ο. he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us.
ω. By this we know the Spirit of truth, and the spirit of error. (4:6)
α. Beloved, let us love one another,
β. because love is of [ἐκ] God;
η. t ξ. and everyone that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. (4:7)
ο. He that loveth not knoweth not God,
ω. because God is love. (4:8)

α. In this was manifested the love of God to us,
β. because that God sent his only-begotten Son into the world,
Χ. ' ξ. that we might live through him. (4:9)
ο. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us,
ω. and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. (cf. 2:2) (4:10)

α. Beloved, if God so loved us,
β. we also owe it to love one another. (4:11)
ς. '' χ. No one hath seen God at any time.
ο. If we love one another,
ω. God abideth in us, and his love is perfected in us. (4:12)
α. By this we know that we abide in him,
β. and he in us,
Ο. jj ζ. ' ξ. because he hath given us of his Spirit. (4:13)
ο. And we have seen and do testify
ω. that the Father sent the Son to be Saviour of the world. (4:14)
α. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God,
β. God abideth in him, and he in God. (4:15)
η. j ξ. And we have known and been faithful to the love that God hath to us.
ο. God is love;
ω. and he that abideth in love abideth in God, and God in him. (4:16)

1. Herein hath love been made perfect with us,
α. 1’. that we may have boldness in the day of judgment:
10. because as He is,
10’. so are we in this world. (4:17)
1. There is no fear in love;
β. 10. but perfect love casteth out fear:
1’. because fear hath torment.
10’. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. (4:18)
Ω. t'j χ.' We love him,
because he first loved us. (4:19)
α. If someone say, “I love God,”
β. and hateth his brother,
ο. t χ. he is a liar:
ο. for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen,
ω. how can he love God whom he hath not seen? (4:20)
ω.tAnd this commandment have we from him,
that he who loveth God love his brother also. (4:21)
α.' Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God:
and everyone that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him. (5:1)
β.' By this we know that we love the children of God,
whenever we love God and keep his commandments. (5:2)
Ϛ. j' ξ. For this is the love of God: when we keep his commandments,
and his commandments are not burdensome. (5:3)
ο. For whatsoever is born of God hath victory over the world,
and this is the victory that hath victory over the world: our faithfulness. (5:4)
ω.' Who is he that hath victory over the world,
'but he that is faithful that Jesus is the Son of God? (5:5)

ς. This is he that came by water and blood: Jesus Christ;
not by water only, but by water and blood.
ζ.t And it is the Spirit that beareth witness,
Ζ. because the Spirit is truth. (5:6)
ς. For there are three that bear witness,
η. ζ. the Spirit, and the water, and the blood:
η. and the three agree in one [οἱ τρεῖς εἰς τὸ ἕν εἰσιν]. (5:8)

1. If we receive the witness [μαρτυρίαν] of men,
ς.t 1’. the witness [μαρτυρία] of God is greater:
10. for this is the testimony [μαρτυρία] of God
10’. which he hath testified [μεμαρτύρηκεν] concerning his Son. (5:9)
1. He that is faithful to the Son of God hath the testimony [μαρτυρίαν] in himself:
ζ.t 1’. he that is not faithful to God hath made him a liar;
Η. ''' 10. because he hath not been faithful to the testimony [μαρτυρίαν]
10’. which God hath testified [μεμαρτύρηκεν] concerning his Son. (5:10)
1. And this is the testimony [μαρτυρία], that God hath given to us life eternal,
η.' 1’. and this life is in his Son. (5:11)
10. He that hath the Son hath life;
10’. he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (5:12)
ς. These things have I written unto you that are faithful to the name of the Son of God;
ς. jj ζ. that ye may know that ye have life eternal,
η. and that ye may be faithful to the name of the Son of God. (5:13)
ς. And this is the boldness that we have towards him,
Ϛ. ζ. tt ζ. that, if we ask anything according to his will,
η. he heareth us: (5:14)
ς. And if we know that he hear us,
η. ζ. whatsoever we ask,
η. we know that we have the things asked for that we asked from him. (5:15)

ς.t If anyone see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death,
he shall ask, and he shall give him life, to them that sin not unto death.
ζ.t There is a sin unto death:
Ζ. I do not say that he should entreat concerning that. (5:16)
η. All unrighteousness is sin:
and there is sin not unto death. (5:17)

ς. We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not,
ς. jj ζ. but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself,
η. and the evil one toucheth him not; (5:18)
ζ. ' we know that we are of God,
Η. and the whole world lieth in evil; (5:19)
α. but we know that the Son of God is come,
β. and hath given us an understanding,
η. t' ξ. that we may know the true one,
ο. and we are in the true one, in his Son Jesus Christ;
ω. this is the true God, and life eternal. (5:20)
