THE VISION OF OBADIAH
The vision of Obadiah. (v. 1a)
Thus saith the Lord God to Edom:
α. “I heard a report from the Lord,
and He sent out a message to the nations, (v. 1b)
‘Arise, and let us rise up against her for battle.’ (2)
Behold, I have made thee least among the nations; thou art greatly dishonored.
The arrogance of thine heart hath elated thee,
dwelling as thou dost in the clefts of the rocks, as one exalting his habitation,
β. saying in his heart, ‘Who will bring me down to the ground?’ (3)
If thou shouldest ascend as the eagle,
and if thou shouldest make thy nest amongst the stars,
from there I shall bring thee down,” saith the Lord. (4)
“If thieves come upon thee or robbers by night,
then to what place wouldest thou escape?
χ. Will they not steal a considerable amount for themselves?
And surely if grape-gatherers come to thee,
will they not leave a gleaning? (5)
How Esau hath been searched out, and his hidden things seized! (6)
All the men of thy covenant have sent thee as far as the borders.
ο. Men at peace with thee have prevailed over thee.
They have set an ambush beneath thee;
there is no understanding in them. (7)
In that day,” saith the Lord,
ω. “I shall destroy the wise men from Edom and understanding from the mountain of Esau. (8)
And thy warriors from Teman shall be terrified,
such that man may be cut off from the mountain of Esau. (9)
“Because of the slaughter and sacrilege against thy brother Jacob,
α. shame shall cover thee,
and thou shalt be cut off forever. (v. 10)
Because of that day in which thou stoodest opposed,
in the days when foreigners were taking captive his forces,
β. and strangers entered into his gates
and cast lots for Jerusalem,
thou also wast as one of them. (11)
χ. And thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother, on the day of foreigners,
nor shouldest thou have rejoiced against the sons of Judah on the day of their destruction,
nor shouldest thou have spoken boastfully on the day of affliction. (12)
ο. Neither shouldest thou have gone into the gates of the people on the day of their suffering.
Neither yet shouldest thou have looked upon their gathering on the day of their ruin,
nor shouldest thou have joined in the attack on their forces on the day of their destruction. (13)
Neither shouldest thou have stood at their mountain passes to put to death those escaping.
ω. Neither shouldest thou have taken prisoner those fleeing from them
on the day of affliction. (14)
ς. “For the day of the Lord is near against all the nations.
ζ. For as thou hast done, it shall be done to thee in the same manner.
η. Thy recompense shall return on thine own head. (v. 15)
“For in the same way that thou drankest on My holy mountain, so too shall all the nations drink wine.
α. They will drink and will be brought down,
and it will be as if they never existed. (v. 16)
β. But there shall be deliverance on Mount Sion,
and it shall be holy.
χ. And the house of Jacob shall take for an inheritance
those that took them for an inheritance. (17)
And the house of Jacob shall be the fire,
ο. and the house of Joseph the flame;
but the house of Esau shall be the stubble.
And they shall flame forth against them, and shall devour them,
ω. and there shall be no fire-bearer for the house of Esau,”
for the Lord hath spoken. (18)
And those who dwell in the Negev shall inherit the mountain of Esau,
ς. and those of the Sephelah the land of the Philistines.
They will inherit the mountain of Ephraim, the plains of Samaria and Benjamin, and the land of Gilead. (v. 19)
ζ. For the captivity of the sons of Israel shall possess the land of the Canaanite as far as Zarephath;
the captivity of Jerusalem as far as Ephratha shall possess the cities of the Negev. (20)
And those who have been rescued shall ascend from Mount Sion
η. to exact vengeance on the mountain of Esau,
and the kingdom shall be the Lord’s. (21)
