Afterword (13:22-25)
THE EPISTLE TO THE HEBREWS
ς. At sundry times and in divers manners in time past, God,
α. jj ζ. having spoken unto the fathers by the prophets, (1:1)
η. hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, (cf. 12:25)
β.' whom he hath appointed heir of all things,
by whom also he made the ages; (1:2)
Α. j χ.j who being the brightness of glory,
and the imprint of his substance [ὑποστάσεως],
ο. and upholding all things by the word [ῥήματι] of his power,
having by means of himself accomplished the purification of our sins,
ς. sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; (1:3) (cf. 8:1, 10:12, 12:2)
ω. ' ζ. being made so much better than the angels,
η. as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (1:4)
_______________________________________________________
ς.'' For unto which of the angels said he at any time,
THOU ART MY SON, THIS DAY HAVE I BEGOTTEN THEE [Ps. 2:7]?
ς. tj ζ. ' And again,
I WILL BE TO HIM A FATHER, AND HE SHALL BE TO ME A SON [2 Kgdms. 7:14]? (1:5)
η. And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith,
AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM [Deut. 32:43]. (1:6)
And of the angels he saith,
1.s WHO MAKETH HIS ANGELS SPIRITS,
AND HIS MINISTERS A FLAME OF FIRE [Ps. 103:5]; (1:7)
but unto the Son,
ζ. tj THY THRONE, O GOD, IS UNTO THE AGE OF AGES:
A SCEPTRE OF UPRIGHTNESS IS THE SCEPTRE OF THY KINGDOM. (1:8)
10. tj THOU HAST LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND HATED INIQUITY;
WHEREFORE GOD, THY GOD, HATH ANOINTED THEE
Β. tj' WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS MORE THAN THY FELLOWS [Ps. 44:5‑6]. (1:9)
And,
THOU IN THE BEGINNING, O LORD, HAST LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH;
AND THE WORKS OF THINE HANDS THE HEAVENS ARE: (1:10)
THEY SHALL PERISH,
BUT THOU ABIDEST;
1. AND ALL LIKE A GARMENT SHALL WAX OLD; (1:11)
η. AND AS A VESTURE SHALT THOU FOLD THEM,
AND THEY SHALL BE CHANGED:
BUT THOU ART THE SAME,
AND THY YEARS SHALL NOT FAIL [Ps. 101:25‑27]. (1:12)
But to which of the angels said he at any time,
10.tSIT ON MY RIGHT HAND,
UNTIL I MAKE THINE ENEMIES THE FOOTSTOOL OF THY FEET [Ps. 109:1]? (1:13)
_____________________________________________
α. Are they not all ministering spirits,
sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? (1:14)
β. Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard,
lest at any time we should drift away. (2:1)
χ. For if the word spoken by angels [in the Torah] was steadfast,
Χ. and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward; (2:2)
ς. how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation;
ο. j ζ. which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord,
η. and was confirmed unto us by them that heard; (2:3)
ς. God jointly bearing witness,
ω. t ζ. both with signs and omens and divers miracles
η. and portions of the Holy Spirit according to his will? (2:4)
_____________________________________________
1.s For not unto the angels hath he put in subjection the world that is coming, whereof we speak. (2:5)
But one in a certain place testified, saying,
10. WHAT IS MAN, THAT THOU ART MINDFUL OF HIM?
α. t OR THE SON OF MAN, THAT THOU VISITEST HIM? (2:6)
10’. THOU MADEST HIM A LITTLE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS;
THOU CROWNEDST HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOUR,
1’. AND DIDST SET HIM OVER THE WORKS OF THY HANDS: (2:7)
THOU HAST PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET [Ps. 8:4‑6].
ς. For in that he put all in subjection under him,
β. t' ζ. he left nothing that is not put under him.
η. But now we see not yet all things put under him. (2:8)
1. But as one made a little lower than the angels do we see Jesus,
Ο. t χ. jj 10. for the suffering of death,
1’. crowned with glory and honour;
10’. that he by the grace of God should taste death for everyone. (2:9)
ς. For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things,
ο. t ζ. in bringing many sons unto glory,
η. to make the originator of their salvation complete through sufferings. (2:10)
1.s For both he that maketh holy and they who are made holy are all of one:
for which cause he is not ashamed to call them brethren, (2:11)
1’. saying, I WILL DECLARE THY NAME UNTO MY BRETHREN,
IN THE MIDST OF THE ASSEMBLY WILL I SING PRAISE UNTO THEE [Ps. 21:22]. (2:12)
ω. t 10.' And again,
I WILL PUT MY TRUST IN HIM [Is. 8:17].
10’. And again,
BEHOLD I AND THE CHILDREN WHICH GOD HATH GIVEN ME [Is. 8:18]. (2:13)
_______________________________________________________
α. Forasmuch then as the children are communicants of flesh and blood,
he also himself likewise took part of the same;
ς. that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death,
β. t ζ. that is, the devil; (2:14)
η. and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. (2:15)
ξ. For verily he took not up the cause of angels;
Ω. but he took up the cause of the seed of Abraham. (2:16)
ς. Wherefore in all things it behooved him to be made like unto his brethren,
ο. t ζ. that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God,
η. to make propitiation for the sins of the people. (2:17)
ω. For in that he himself hath suffered being tested,
he is able to help them that are tested. (2:18) (cf. 4:15)
α. Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling,
β. consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession,
α. t' χ. Jesus the Messiah; (3:1)
ο. who was faithful to him that appointed him,
ω. as also was Moses in all his house. (3:2)
β.' For this one was counted worthy of more glory than Moses,
inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house. (3:3)
Α. j' χ. For every house is builded by someone;
but he that built all things is God. (3:4)
ς. And Moses indeed was faithful in all his house, as a servant,
ο. tj ζ. for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after; (3:5)
η. but the Messiah as a son over his own house;
ω. whose house are we,
' provided we hold fast the boldness and the boasting of the hope firm unto the end. (3:6)
_______________________________________________________
Wherefore (as the Holy Spirit saith,
α. TODAY IF YE WILL HEAR HIS VOICE, HARDEN NOT YOUR HEARTS, (3:7‑8a)
t' AS IN THE PROVOCATION, IN THE DAY OF TESTING IN THE WILDERNESS: (3:8b)
β. WHEN YOUR FATHERS TESTED ME, PROVED ME,
j AND SAW MY WORKS FORTY YEARS. (3:9)
α. t' χ. WHEREFORE I WAS GRIEVED WITH THAT GENERATION,
ο. AND SAID, THEY DO ALWAY ERR IN THEIR HEART;
j AND THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN MY WAYS. (3:10)
ω. SO I SWARE IN MY WRATH,
'' THEY SHALL NOT ENTER INTO MY REST [Ps. 94:8‑11]), (3:11)
α. take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unfaithfulness
t' in departing from the living God. (3:12)
β. But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today;
j lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. (3:13)
β. t' χ. For we are made partakers of the Messiah,
jj if unto the beginning of our assurance [ὑποστάσεως] we hold steadfast until the end; (3:14)
ο. while it is said, TODAY IF YE WILL HEAR HIS VOICE,
j HARDEN NOT YOUR HEARTS, AS IN THE PROVOCATION [Ps. 94:8]. (3:15)
ω. For some, when they had heard, did provoke:
'' howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. (3:16)
ς. But with whom was he grieved forty years?
j was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? (3:17)
Β. tt χ. j ζ. And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest,
j but to them that obeyed not? (3:18)
η. So we see that
tj they could not enter in because of unfaithfulness. (3:19)
Let us therefore fear,
ς. t lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest,
any of you should seem to come short of it. (4:1)
For we were evangelized, just as they were:
ο. j ζ. t but the word which was heard did not profit them,
not being mixed with faithfulness in them that heard it. (4:2)
For we which have been faithful do enter into rest,
η. t as he said, AS I HAVE SWORN IN MY WRATH, IF THEY SHALL ENTER INTO MY REST [Ps. 94:11]:
although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. (4:3)
For he hath spoken somewhere of the seventh day in this way,
α. j AND GOD DID REST THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS [Gen. 2:2]. (4:4)
And in this place again,
IF THEY SHALL ENTER INTO MY REST [Ps. 94:11]. (4:5)
Seeing therefore it remaineth for some to enter therein,
β. '' and they who were first evangelized entered not in because of disobedience: (4:6)
again, he defineth a certain day, TODAY, saying this in David, after so long a time;
as it is said, TODAY IF YE WILL HEAR HIS VOICE, HARDEN NOT YOUR HEARTS [Ps. 94:8]. (4:7)
ω. j' For if Joshua [Jesus] had given them rest,
ξ. ' then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. (4:8)
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God. (4:9)
ο. For he that is entered into his rest,
j he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his. (4:10)
ω. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest,
'' lest any man fall after the same example of disobedience. (4:11)
_____________________________________________
α. For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword,
β. piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow,
Χ. ' χ. and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (4:12)
ο. Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight:
ω. but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. (4:13)
_____________________________________________
ς. Seeing, then, that we have a great high priest that is passed into the heavens,
ς. ' ζ. Jesus the Son of God,
η. let us hold fast our confession. (4:14)
ς. For we have not an high priest
Ο. t ζ. ζ. which cannot sympathize with our weaknesses;
η. but he was similarly tested in all things, apart from sin. (4:15) (cf. 2:18)
ς. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace,
η. tj ζ. that we may obtain mercy,
η. and find grace to help in time of need. (4:16)
_______________________________________________________
For every high priest taken from among men
ς. j is ordained for men in things pertaining to God,
that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: (5:1)
who can have compassion on the ignorant,
ς. tj ζ. and on them that are out of the way;
for that he himself also is compassed with weakness. (5:2)
And by reason hereof he owes it,
η. t as for the people, so also for himself,
to offer for sins. (5:3)
And no man taketh this honour unto himself,
ς. j but he that is called of God,
as was Aaron. (5:4)
So also the Messiah glorified not himself to be made an high priest;
Ω. tj ζ.t ζ. j but he that said unto him, THOU ART MY SON,
TODAY HAVE I BEGOTTEN THEE [Ps. 2:7]. (5:5)
As he saith also in another place,
η. '' THOU ART A PRIEST UNTO THE AGE
AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK [Ps. 109:4]. (5:6)
Who in the days of his flesh,
when prayers and supplications,
ς. unto him that was able to save him from death,
with strong crying and tears did he offer up,
and was heard [εἰσακουσθεὶς] in that he was reverent; (5:7)
though being the Son,
η. ζ. j yet learned he by the things which he suffered
obedience [ὑπακοήν]; (5:8)
and being brought to completion,
he became unto all them that obey [ὑπακούουσιν] him
η. the causer of eternal salvation; (5:9)
called of God an high priest
after the order of Melchizedek. (5:10)
α. Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered,
tj'seeing ye are become slothful in listening. (5:11)
β. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers,
''' ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God;
α. tj ξ. and are become such as have need of milk,
jj and not of strong meat. (5:12)
ο. For every one that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteousness:
tj for he is a babe. (5:13)
ω. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age,
those who out of habit have their senses exercised to discern both good and bad. (5:14)
ς. Therefore leaving an account of the principles of the Messiah,
j let us go on unto completion;
not laying again the foundation
of repentance from dead works, and of faithfulness toward God, (6:1)
β. j' ζ. j of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands,
and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. (6:2)
η. And this will we do,
tj if God permit. (6:3)
For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened,
and have tasted of the heavenly gift,
ς. j' and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, (6:4)
and have tasted the good word [ῥῆμα] of God,
Ϛ. t χ. j and the powers of the coming Age, (6:5)
ζ. if they shall fall away,
j to renew them again unto repentance;
η. they crucifying to themselves the Son of God afresh,
tj and openly holding him in contempt. (6:6)
1. For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it,
10. and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed,
receiveth blessing from God: (6:7)
ο.
10’. but that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected,
and is nigh unto cursing;
1’. whose end is to be burned. (6:8)
α. But, beloved, we are persuaded better things of you,
tj'and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak. (6:9)
β. For God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love,
''' which ye have showed toward his name,
ω. j' χ. in that ye have ministered to the saints,
jj and do minister. (6:10)
ο. And we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence
tj to the full assurance of hope unto the end: (6:11)
ω. That ye be not slothful,
but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. (6:12)
_______________________________________________________
tj'For when God made promise to Abraham,
α. t because he had no one greater to swear by,
tj'he sware by himself, (6:13)
β. saying, SURELY BLESSING I WILL BLESS THEE,
''' AND MULTIPLYING I WILL MULTIPLY THEE [Gen. 22:17]. (6:14)
ξ. And so, after he had been longsuffering,
jj he obtained the promise. (6:15)
ο. For men indeed swear by the greater:
tj and to them an end of all dispute is an oath for confirmation, (6:16)
by which God, willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of the promise
ς. t the immutability of his counsel,
ω. j mediated by oath: (6:17)
tthat by two immutable things in which it was impossible for God to lie,
we might have a mighty consolation,
ς. we who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: (6:18)
j which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast,
ζ. and which entereth into that within the veil; (6:19)
t' whither the forerunner is for us entered,
η. Jesus, after the order of Melchizedek,
tj made an high priest unto the Age. (6:20)
α. For this Melchizedek, king of Salem,
tj'priest of the most high God,
β. who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; (7:1)
''' to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all;
Ζ. j ζ. χ. first being by interpretation King of righteousness,
jj and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; (7:2)
ο. without father, without mother, without descent,
tj having neither beginning of days, nor end of life;
ω. but made like unto the Son of God;
abideth a priest unto perpetuity. (7:3)
α. Now consider how great this man was,
tj'unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils. (7:4)
''' And verily they that are of the sons of Levi that receive the priesthood
''' have a commandment to take tithes of the people
β. t according to the Torah,
''' that is, of their brethren,
''' though they come out of the loins of Abraham: (7:5)
jj But he whose genealogy is not from them received tithes of Abraham,
η. tj ξ. j and blessed him that had the promises. (7:6)
jj And without all contradiction the less is blessed of the better. (7:7)
ο. And here, men that die receive tithes,
tj but there, he of whom it is witnessed that he liveth doth. (7:8)
And as I may so say, through Abraham
Levi also, who receiveth tithes,
ω. t payed tithes. (7:9)
For he was yet in the loins of his father,
when Melchizedek met him. (7:10)
_______________________________________________________
tj'If therefore completion were by the Levitical priesthood,
tj'(for under it the people received the Torah,)
α. j what further need was there that after the order of Melchizedek
tj'another priest should rise,
tj'and not be called after the order of Aaron? (7:11)
''' For the priesthood being changed,
''' there is also of necessity made a change of the Torah. (7:12)
β. jj For he of whom these things are spoken
''' belongeth to another tribe,
''' of which no one gave attendance at the altar. (7:13)
ς. tj χ. For it is evident that our Lord arose out of Judah;
jj of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. (7:14)
tj And it is yet abundantly more evident:
tj for that after the similitude of Melchizedek there ariseth another priest, (7:15)
ο. t who is made, not after the Torah of a carnal commandment,
tj but after the power of an endless life. (7:16)
tj For he witnesseth that
tj THOU ART A PRIEST UNTO THE AGE AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK [Ps. 109:4]. (7:17)
For there is verily a disannulling of the commandment going before
for the weakness and unprofitableness thereof. (7:18)
ω. t For the Torah made nothing complete,
but the bringing in of a better hope did;
by the which we draw nigh unto God. (7:19)
α. And inasmuch as not without an oath — (7:20)
''' for those priests were made without an oath,
β. but this man with an oath by him that said unto him,
''' THE LORD SWARE AND WILL NOT REPENT,
''' THOU ART A PRIEST UNTO THE AGE AFTER THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK — (7:21)
Η. ζ. j χ. by so much was Jesus made a surety of a better covenant. (7:22)
tj And they truly were many priests,
ο. j because they were not suffered to remain by reason of death: (7:23)
tj but this man, because he abideth unto the Age,
tj hath an inviolable priesthood, (7:24)
ω. wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him,
seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. (7:25)
j For such an high priest befitted us, holy,
j harmless,
ς. t' undefiled,
j separate from sinners,
j and become higher than the heavens; (7:26)
t' who needeth not daily, as those high priests,
t' first for his own sins
η. ζ. tj to offer up sacrifice,
t' and then for the people’s:
t' for this he did once, when he offered up himself. (7:27)
tj For the Torah
tj appointeth men high priests
tj which have weakness;
η. jj but the word of the oath-swearing,
tj which was after the Torah,
tj appointeth the Son,
tj who unto the Age hath been brought to completion. (7:28)
α. Now this is the sum of the things which we have spoken:
β. We have such an high priest,
ς. ' χ. who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; (8:1) (cf. 1:3, 10:12, 12:2)
ο. a minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle,
ω. which the Lord pitched, and not man. (8:2)
α. For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices:
t' wherefore it is necessary that this one too have somewhat to offer. (8:3)
Α. j' β. For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest,
ζ. χ. seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the Torah: (8:4)
ο. who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things,
ω. as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle:
'' for, SEE, saith he, THAT THOU MAKE ALL THINGS ACCORDING TO THE PATTERN [τύπον] SHOWN TO THEE IN THE MOUNT [Ex. 25:40]. (8:5)
ς. But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry,
η. j' ζ. by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant,
η. which was established upon better promises. (8:6)
_______________________________________________________
α₁. For if that first covenant had been faultless,
then should no place have been sought for the second. (8:7)
1. For finding fault with them, he saith,
α₂.j1’. BEHOLD, THE DAYS COME, SAITH THE LORD,
10. WHEN I WILL MAKE A NEW COVENANT
10’. WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH: (8:8)
1. NOT ACCORDING TO THE COVENANT THAT I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS
β. 10. IN THE DAY WHEN I TOOK THEM BY THE HAND TO LEAD THEM OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT;
1’. BECAUSE THEY CONTINUED NOT IN MY COVENANT,
10’. AND I REGARDED THEM NOT, SAITH THE LORD. (8:9)
ς. FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT
Β. tj χ. j' ζ. THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL
η. AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAITH THE LORD;
1. I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MIND,
ο. 1’. AND WRITE THEM IN THEIR HEARTS:
10. AND I WILL BE TO THEM A GOD,
10’. AND THEY SHALL BE TO ME A PEOPLE: (8:10)
ς. AND THEY SHALL NOT TEACH EVERY MAN HIS NEIGHBOUR,
j AND EVERY MAN HIS BROTHER, SAYING, KNOW THE LORD:
ω₂. '' ζ. FOR ALL SHALL KNOW ME,
j FROM THE LEAST OF THEM TO THE GREATEST OF THEM. (8:11)
η. FOR I WILL BE MERCIFUL TO THEIR UNRIGHTEOUSNESS,
tj AND THEIR SINS AND THEIR INIQUITIES WILL I REMEMBER NO MORE [Jer. 31:31‑34]. (8:12)
ω₁. In that he saith, A NEW, he hath made the first old.
''' Now that which decayeth and is grown old is ready to vanish away. (8:13)
_______________________________________________________
j Then verily the first covenant had also ordinances of divine service,
j and a worldly sanctuary. (9:1)
ς. j For a tabernacle was made, the first,
j wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the showbread;
j which is called the sanctuary. (9:2)
j And after the second veil,
ς. ζ. t' the tabernacle which is called the Holiest of all; (9:3)
j which had the golden censer,
tj and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold,
tj wherein was the golden pot that had manna,
η. t and Aaron’s rod that budded,
tj and the tables of the covenant; (9:4)
tj and over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy seat;
tj of which we cannot now speak particularly. (9:5)
Χ.
α. Now when these things were thus ordained,
t' into the first tabernacle went the priests always, accomplishing the divine service. (9:6)
β. But into the second went the high priest alone once every year,
ζ. t not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people: (9:7)
χ. the Holy Spirit this signifying,
ο. that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest,
ω. while as the first tabernacle was yet standing: (9:8)
α. which was a parable for the time then present,
β. in which both gifts and sacrifices were offered that could not, according to the conscience,
η. j χ. complete him that did the service; (9:9)
ο. only in foods and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances,
ω. imposed until the time of rectification. (9:10)
_______________________________________________________
α. But the Messiah having arrived an high priest of good things to come,
β. by a greater and more complete tabernacle,
j not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation; (9:11)
α. '' ξ. neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood
ο. he entered in once into the holy place,
ω. having obtained eternal redemption. (9:12)
α. For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer
β. sprinkling the unclean, maketh holy to the purifying of the flesh: (9:13)
β. j ξ. how much more shall the blood of the Messiah,
ο. who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God,
ω. purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? (9:14)
α. And for this cause he is the mediator of a new covenant:
β. so that, a death having occurred
j for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant,
Ο. j' χ. tt' ξ. they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. (9:15)
ο. For where a covenant is, there must also of necessity be the death of the covenanter. (9:16)
ω. For a covenant is assured after men are dead:
'' otherwise it is of no strength at all while the covenanter liveth. (9:17)
α. Whereupon neither the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. (9:18)
t' For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the Torah,
β. he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop,
j and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, (9:19)
ο. χ. saying, THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT WHICH GOD HATH ENJOINED UNTO YOU [Ex. 24:8]. (9:20)
ο. Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. (9:21)
ω. And almost all things are by the Torah purified with blood;
'' and without shedding of blood is no remission. (9:22)
t' Necessary therefore was it that the models [ὑποδείγματα] of things in the heavens
α. j should be purified with these;
t' but the heavenly things themselves
